We serve coffee, but we’re not your typical coffee shop. Inspired by the great cafés of Europe, where conversation blooms and writers, artists, activists and intellectuals make their mark, we’ve made a conscious decision to slow things down.
There’s no wifi, no television and no 30-minute maximum for our tables. Come and stay awhile.
The Art of Roasting

Coffee beans are as distinctive as people’s tastes for it. Depending on where they're grown, they can look and taste differently. Coffee roasting is a heating process that turns fresh, green coffee beans into the fragrant dark brown beans we enjoy each day. It’s through roasting that a coffee’s unique aroma, acidity, body—and, of course, flavor—are cultivated. Each coffee bean is roasted to highlight these delicate flavor characteristics and to bring out their individual potential. It’s a craft that takes years of training and skillful dedication.

A classic and time-honored dark roast with notes of molasses and caramelized sugar that’s perfect for making classic espresso drinks. Every espresso beverage we handcraft for you begins right here. Our master roasters coax the beans along, the heat taking them deep and dark—a recipe for caramelly sweetness so right it’s never been changed. The quest began in 1975 with a search for the perfect melding of beans and roast, ending months of intense experimentation later with the roast you’re holding in your hand. A blend of beans from Latin America and Asia/Pacific, roasted the way only we can.
